This site is dedicated to the escape from banality.
Endymion was a king, fortunate enough to be born rich, beautiful, and strong. He threw it all away to pursue a lover he saw only in his dreams. As it turned out, the woman from his dreams did exist, she was Phoebe, the goddess of the moon. He was granted immortality on the condition that he spend all of his time asleep and dreaming of her. He accepted.
Icarus was the son of Daedalus who created two pairs of wings from wax and feathers in order for them to escape their imprisonment in a tower. The boy, exulting in his ability to fly, was not content simply to escape. He flew directly toward the sun, to place himself among the gods. As it happened, Icarus' wings melted and he plummeted to his death, while Daedalus charted a safe course home. A cautionary tale, perhaps, but in the end, although he failed to reach his goal, Icarus did fly higher than his father.
I hope to eventually make this web page truly something to behold, with great art by myself and my friends. The pictures will come. For now, I'll just lay out sections for my various interests and let you find out whether or not they contain anything. To see what's new, check out the updates section.
Although expensive, I still make my way out to the occasional flick. I've also decided to try my hand at film making. I'll keep you posted.
I do like to go flop around in the clubs, so I'll tell you about the ones I like. As with theatre, Vancouver is also a hotbed for great, inexpensive dance performances. I'll let you know what I see.
Wait a minute I'm a heterosexual male I'm not supposed to care about fashion! Yes, I know. A lot of people succumb to this stereotype. I'm not one of them.
Without taking into account poverty, which is quite a strong factor for me, we all have the choice of what we wear. Or do we? Sexism has definitely been at work creating the collective aesthetic for human appearance. Women have traditionally been property or prizes, to be bought or won by wealthy, hard-working men. The result? Extensive lines of women's clothing, makeup, and jewelry, to make the property/prize seem more exotic, varied, and precious. Two male uniforms: the rugged and hard-working T-shirt/blue jean combo, and the business suit. I hope I'm not the only one who finds this disgusting.
Well, now that we're all modern and liberated, women are taking their appearance into their own hands. Yes, they can now wear blue jeans and T-shirts, or even suits! Isn't it wonderful how we've conquered that old sexist aesthetic? I think so. Too bad most men still don't seem able to bypass their cultural conditioning and make themselves look interesting.
Well, I for one, plan to scrape a few of my precious pennies together to aid in the overthrow of the banal male aesthetic. Care to join me?
I read a lot, and I'm very interested in writing. This section will contain any of my writing, or that of my friends, not related to any of the other categories, as well as reviews of books and poems I've read.
Another interest of mine is miniature based strategy games. Although I do not consider this category an art form in itself, the modeling and painting of miniatures requires a certain amount of artistry and craftsmanship. The games I play also boast excellent dramatic settings and characters that have inspired me to do a bit of writing of my own. The games themselves appeal greatly to the mathematician in me, as they require a knowledge of, or at least an instinct for, the laws of probability.
Unlike some of the preceding topics, something everyone seems to understand and enjoy. This section contains information about both music I listen to and music I make.
Two dimensional visual media sounds so bland, and is a misnomer when applied to the many textures available when painting or drawing. I am lucky enough to have as friends some really great artists in these media, and will display some of it for you here, with their permission.
Roleplaying games (RPG's) are my principal source of entertainment and inspiration. This section contains my own explanation of this art medium's unique appeal, as well as reviews of systems I have tried, RPG related stories, bio's for characters I am playing, and various related miscellanea.
Living in Vancouver, I have the opportunity to see amazing theatre nearly any day of the week for very low prices. I resolve to take advantage of this phenomenon in the future, perhaps even to the point of getting involved.
Throughout the site, I've made hypertext links to other sites. They are consolidated here, along with a few others that I just threw in to spice up the page.
