Cinder

Cinder: Watercolour portrait by Steve Bell

Steve did this one with Reeves watercolours (the kind that look like a tray of big coloured tablets). It was interesting to glance at Steve's artistic process as I worked on Chig; he originally painstakingly sculpted his subject's features entirely in blue, then decided it didn't work. After this, he became wildly experimental with colour and texture, producing the vibrant work he scanned for Endymion and Icarus.

I love this piece! It really captures the dreamy mystic side of the character, and also of the Tribe 8 game itself. Unfortunately for you, some of the richness of colour was lost in the digital scan. If you live in (or visit) Vancouver, you should see if you can get a glimpse of the original. I'm sure Steve wouldn't mind. Email me!

Cinder: Charcoal and chalk drawing by Steve Bell

I watched Steve do the charcoal work on this piece, but he added the chalk highlights at home. It's a real representation of the character's frequent bouts of despair and hopelessness. His technique of smearing his media to develop smoothly curved "3-D" surfaces is really showcased here.

Cinder: Pencil drawing by Steve Bell

Here is the latest and most painstaking drawing of Cinder. Steve decided she needed a little more attitude; he's started with the drawing, and intends to start playing her a bit tougher as well.

I think Steve has a really clear picture of the character in his head now. The stretched out limbs are really noticeable here; the character is supposed to be very tall and thin. He's also added the tattoos and a really nasty haircut. (I asked him if Cinder had started letting her sister cut her hair. He indicated that the new Cinder was hardcore, but not suicidal.)
